IP audits are conducted for many reasons. The most common reason is for sale, acquisition or investment purposes. In this session you will learn about the IP audit process, the most common aspects of a ventures IP that is audited on and how to best posture your IP, IP strategy and IP culture to come out of an audit with flying colours. This seminar will also cover other reasons for an audit such as for cost-cutting purposes or to help a business design a more coordinated approach to IP.

Penny Catley
Penny is a commercial intellectual property lawyer in Australia and New Zealand. She has practised for more than 30 years and is a registered patent attorney in both countries. Penny works for public and private sector clients in a range of industries, including food and beverage, information technology, health, wine, education, fashion and textiles, energy, agriculture and FMCG among others. She currently acts for successful local companies Z Energy, Jade Software, House of Travel, Contact Energy, Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka, and Australian fashion designer Collette Dinnigan. Penny is a past President of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys (NZIPA) and was named by Managing IP as one of the Top 250 Women in IP 2022.
Michael Moyes

Jo Giboney
Jo is a member of Duncan Cotterill's tax team and advises domestic and foreign clients on the New Zealand income tax and GST consequences of a broad range of transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, inbound and outbound investment, and corporate restructurings. Jo regularly assist clients with tax disputes and negotiations with the Commissioner of Inland Revenue, and with tax investigations, binding and non-binding ruling applications and tax risk reviews.
Anton Blijilevens
Anton joined AJ Park in 1994 after graduating from the University of Canterbury with a Masters degree in mechanical engineering. He gained his law degree from The University of Auckland in 2004. Experienced in IP protection strategies and conducting IP audits for mechanical and manufacturing technology firms, Anton has a track record of helping exporters be successful locally and internationally. As head of AJ Park’s specialist China team, Anton provides IP strategy advice to Australian and New Zealand companies looking to do business in or with China. His clients come from diverse industries such as packaging, marine engineering, aviation, agritech, and heavy engineering. Anton has worked at AJ Park for over 26 years and has received many industry awards including a listing as one of New Zealand’s top legal practitioners in the field of patents in the 2017 Expert Guides. He was also listed as one of the world’s leading patent professionals in the 2016 IAM Patent 1000 index, which quoted him as being ‘an engineering ace who can cover everything from fluid dynamics to aviation engineering’. He was also named among the top 300 IP strategists in the world by IAM Strategy 300, and in 2014 was recognised by Asia IP magazine as ‘one of 50 patent lawyers you should know’. Anton is a staff lecture at the University of Auckland and guest lecturer at AUT and Massey University, speaks on IP at international conferences and events across Asia and lectures in patent drafting for the United Nations in developing countries 2-3 times a year.
Kate Wilson
Kate Wilson is an internationally recognised IP strategist and a registered patent attorney in NZ and AU. While a partner in James & Wells, she managed the IP portfolios and was corporate liaison with a number of New Zealand’s iconic organisations. These included Zespri, the Gallagher Group, AgResearch and Bomac Laboratories. Some of the portfolios she managed ended up being part of multi-million dollar mergers with multi-nationals such as Bayer, Lely and Pfizer. Kate has extensive business experience from multiple angles including building up James & Wells, owning a number of non-IP businesses, an independent director, and what she learnt from being a corporate liaison. Part of her current IP strategy practice includes working with Zuulander Enterprises which project manages professional services. This includes working with other professionals on Pitch Decks and Information Memoranda.
