Richard Hargreaves
Originally from the UK, Richard has specialised in New Zealand insurance law for over 10 years. He has a particular focus on professional indemnity defence work. Richard is known for his work defending other lawyers under their professional indemnity policies, operating in the Law Society complaints process and civil courts. He also defends other professionals such as architects, real estate agents, brokers and engineers. Richard's expertise and national profile have been recognised in the Chambers directory, Legal 500, by NZ Lawyer and Insurance Business NZ magazine.
Known as a fair operator, Richard's standing often allows pragmatic solutions to be reached quickly. Where no negotiated solution is possible, he is an experienced and effective advocate, as lead counsel in the High Court as well as various regulatory tribunals.
Stephanie Woods
Stephanie is Special Counsel in the firm's national dispute resolution team specialising in insurance defence litigation. She also works on contentious trust and estate matters and regularly provides advice to local government on a range of public law issues. Stephanie is appointed by insurers to defend professionals from negligence, breach of contract and other civil liability claims, and to act in disciplinary proceedings, including for lawyers, real estate agents, insurance brokers, engineers and architects. She also has experience acting for both insurers and plaintiffs in earthquake and other general insurance disputes and in advising insurers on policy response and policy wording.
Stephanie provides practical and succinct advice to clients throughout the litigation process, including in relation to settlement options. Where appropriate, she is adept at using court processes strategically to bring claims to resolution.
Active in the insurance space, Stephanie established the Christchurch branch of the Insurance Network in 2019 and is the co-President of the Christchurch branch.
