Ciska de Rijk
Ciska de Rijk runs her own consultancy, Essence Compliance, advising companies on the maze of laws that govern the food and beverage space. Prior to setting up her own business Ciska worked for top-tier commercial law firms across ANZ. Ciska has developed a particular focus on all aspects of sales and marketing together with food law, including advice on composition, labelling and advertising of food and beverages. Ciska is uniquely placed in that she has both a science and law degree, has worked in-house within a number of multi-national food companies, and has practiced law in both New Zealand and Australia. She now provides specific legal compliance advice in the food and beverage space across both these jurisdictions.
Glen Neal
Glen is responsible for the risk management and intelligence functions associated with developing food standards. This includes labelling, contaminants, composition, additives and foods requiring preapproval such as novel foods, public health nutrition standards, and the economics and social science inputs to standards development. Glen’s background is in public health; he has held a range of leadership positions within New Zealand’s central government food and biosecurity authorities, such as Ministry for Primary Industries, and project managed the establishment of the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZSFA). Glen is the senior FSANZ representative in New Zealand and is responsible for managing its relationships with consumers, industry, government (MPI in particular) and other stakeholders in New Zealand. Glen thinks that the mega trends of increasing integration of global food supplies, emerging risks, increased attention on foods role in public health and tightening public sector budgets are strong forces that drive the need for increased collaboration, agility and creativity.
Dr Teresa Nicoletti
Dr Teresa Nicoletti is a Partner in Mills Oakley's Intellectual Property team, based in Sydney. Teresa is both a lawyer and scientist with more than 20 years' experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device industries in Australia and New Zealand. She has also worked across a number of other product-related industries, including foods, cosmetics, veterinary pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and industrial chemicals. Teresa is an experienced negotiator and regularly liaises with regulatory authorities and government administrators on behalf of her clients, including the Therapeutic Goods Administration, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Branch, the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority and state food and health authorities. Teresa is actively involved in industry and is regularly invited to speak at industry conferences and deliver seminars and workshops.
Megan McEwin
As the Director of Policy & Regulatory Affairs at the Australian Association of National Advertisers (AANA), Megan works with the major food and beverage brands in Australia to develop advertising codes that ensure food and beverage advertising continues to meet community requirements and expectations. With over 20 years’ experience in the regulatory and self-regulatory sectors, Megan started her career with the ACCC before moving to the industry self-regulatory sector with AMP, Optus and later INMS, the telecommunications self-regulatory number allocation and porting system. Megan holds a Bachelor of Law.
Hilary Souter
Hilary Souter is the Chief Executive of the Advertising Standards Authority and has worked in the wider media industry on a range of issues to support responsible advertising for over 25 years. She manages code reviews for advertising for children and young people, alcohol, finance, gambling and therapeutic and health advertising, and runs the secretariat that annually processes over 1500 enquiries and complaints. Hilary is a guest lecturer on advertising standards at New Zealand universities and gives regular presentations to both domestic and international audiences on the value of advertising self-regulation.
Amelia Edwards
Amelia is the founder and Chief Counsel of Universal Counsel, the one-stop professionals. There she heads up UC F&B, a network of experts in everything that matters to food and beverage businesses. Maria Venetoulis
Maria Venetoulis has been practising law for over 17 years, with most of those spent in-house across the media, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. She rose through the ranks at the multinational pharmaceutical companies Alphapharm (Mylan) and Aspen before becoming the General Counsel for Adshel in 2016, at which she played an instrumental role in the AU$570 million acquisition of the company by Ooh Media in 2018. Since then, she has been the Head of Legal and Compliance, a member of the Senior Leadership and a Director of AstraZeneca, and is now the General Counsel for Danone, where she leads a team of scientists, lawyers, and compliance specialists to deliver food and healthcare solutions across Oceania. Throughout her career, Maria has developed a deep interest and expertise across numerous applicable laws, regulations and industry codes, including in relation to patents, trade marks, copyright, registered designs and trade secrets, the MAIF agreement, FSANZ, ASMI Code of Practice, Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 (Cth), the PBS, Pharmac, Medsafe, National Health Act 1953 (Cth), the Competition and Consumer Law 2010 (Cth), the Commerce Act 1986 (NZ), the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the AANA Code
Nick Pughe-Spicer
During his 18 years in the Insurance Sector Nick has been instrumental in structuring and placing complex insurance programs across a number of key international markets. A multi-product and multi-Industry specialist, Nick has profound experience with co-ordinating, designing and implementing major insurance programs and has been instrumental in adding value to clients across all market conditions. Nick fully leverages his expertise during the implementation and negotiation process to deliver comprehensive solutions that protect the balance sheets of his clients. As Director and strategic leader of Adroit Speciality, Nick has a genuine passion and understanding of business and the fundamental requirements for success.
Alison Jones
Alison Jones is a Special Counsel in the intellectual property practice of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, Australia’s leading independent law firm. Alison specialises in intellectual property and consumer protection law, and advises clients across all business sectors on a range of IP, regulatory and related areas including IP strategy, advising on commercial arrangements of various kinds and contract drafting, advertising and marketing, competition and consumer law issues, IP enforcement, and commercial regulatory (including food law, cosmetics, life sciences and therapeutic goods regulation, product liability risk and recall, privacy and data protection). Alison's experience in this area also includes secondments at leading companies in IP-driven sectors, including fast moving consumer goods and life sciences.
Fiona Fleming
Fiona is a Director of FJ Fleming Food Consulting Pty Ltd and CEO of the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology (AIFST). She is an experienced Corporate and Regulatory Affairs professional who has been involved in leading and facilitating change and developing management strategies across a portfolio of food policy and regulation matters in global FMCG and NGO environments. Fiona has 40 years’ experience in the food industry in the areas of dairy, seafood, cereal based foods, smallgoods, tea, simmer sauces and pastes, ingredients and infant formula. Fiona has previously worked for a large FMCG company in the role of Group Quality and Corporate Affairs Manager. In this role she was responsible for providing leadership across Australia and New Zealand in the areas of food policy and regulation; consumer affairs and communication; issues and crisis management and food quality and safety. Fiona is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology. Fiona is currently serving as a Non-Executive Director and Deputy Chair of Healthy Kids. Fiona is a member of Allergy and Anaphylaxis Australia, an Associate Member of the Allergen Bureau, and a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Fiona holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Food Technology) from the University of Queensland and a Masters of Nutrition Management from the University of Wollongong.
Jono Friedrich
Jonathon Friedrich is the General Counsel and Company Secretary of All G Foods Pty Ltd, which is an Australian food-tech start-up focused on developing and commercialising alternative-protein via plant-based mimetic “meat” and synthetic dairy. Jonathon is an experienced General Counsel and Executive who has worked with, and for, FMCG and pharmaceutical businesses both locally and globally for 15 years. Jonathon’s legal passions include intellectual property protection and enforcement, commercialisation of intellectual property, and consumer-facing regulation. Jonathon is a member of the Alternative Protein Council, a previous member and director of various social justice organisations, and an entrepreneur. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Sydney.
Kirsten Grinter
Kirsten has worked in several different capacities across her career, R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Research, Regulatory and Nutrition. Her current role is as Regulatory, Scientific Affairs and Nutrition Manager Nestlé where she has responsibility for a team of people who together manage regulatory, scientific affairs and Nutrition across the Oceania Business (Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Islands). Kirsten represents Nestlé on the Australian Food and Grocery Council’s (AFGC) Nutrition and Regulatory Committee and takes part in many AFGC food industry working groups to drive pre-competitive industry solutions. Kirsten is a Director of the Allergen Bureau and has been involved with the Allergen Bureau from its inception in 2005. Kirsten is focussed on driving the VITAL risk-based program, through the work of the VITAL Scientific Expert Panel and industry engagement strategies to enable international alignment and acceptance. Kirsten is also Chair of the Alternative Proteins Council which was founded in March 2021 and is the representative group for Australia and New Zealand’s alternative protein sector which is a platform to discuss shared issues and opportunities. Kirsten considers that working collaboratively with industry stakeholders, consumer groups and through Government initiated working groups to be the key for the industry to remain competitive and successful globally.
