Shelley Eden, Director, Gaze Burt
Shelley leads the employment team at Gaze Burt. She has over 20 years experience in employment law, representing clients at every level and dealing with every type of employment issue. Shelley brings technical expertise but also commercial pragmatism and pro-activity to her role, which is particularly appreciated by her employer clients. Shelley is a strong presenter and enjoys helping businesses to satisfactorily resolve employment issues and to have an engaged, productive workforce. She often works closely with the HR team in client businesses, to help achieve this. She has also developed a practice in employment investigations – helping employers to understand what is happening in their workplaces and manage accordingly. Shelley’s recognised experience and strong advocacy skills have also made her a highly effective advocate for employees facing dismissal, redundancy, disciplinary action, discrimination or workplace abuse.
Paul Sills, Barrister and Mediator
Paul is a barrister with 26 years’ conflict resolution experience. Paul is a commercial arbitrator, mediator and barrister in New Zealand and internationally. Appointments include: AMINZ Fellow, Fellow of CIArb , Fellow of Prime Disputes, Fellow of MIArb (Malaysia), Resolution Institute Arbitration Committee member (Australasia), Netball New Zealand Disciplinary Committee chairman, mediator for the Marine Industry Association, and mediator for the New Zealand Law Society. Paul is also Chairperson of the New Zealand Master Builders Association Code of Conduct committee and is on the Franchise Association of New Zealand mediation panel.
John Steadman, Senior Commercial Legal Partner, Chorus
John has 20 years’ experience in law. He spent 8 years in private practice in a variety of commercial and litigation roles before moving in-house to support the ICT business arm of Telecom New Zealand. John spent 8 years working for the Telecom/Spark in-house legal team in a variety of roles before moving into a commercial role for three years as the Head of Strategic Projects where he was responsible for the negotiation and contracting of $2b+ 4G network contracts, online media platforms Lightbox and Spark Sport and ran the 5G network negotiations. He is an experienced technology and telecommunications lawyer and currently works for the Chorus legal team supporting the roll out of fibre across New Zealand. John also regularly speaks and writes on legal topics. He has taught negotiation for the College of Law since 2011 and has studied at the Harvard Negotiation Institute.
Helen MacKay, Director, Juno Legal
Helen is passionate about the value that great lawyers create when they work inside and alongside their client organisations. She helps companies and public sector entities get optimal value from their legal services, effectively manage risk and achieve high performance through their in-house legal team. With more than 20 years’ experience as an in-house lawyer in New Zealand and the UK (including seven years leading the professional association for in-house lawyers), Helen believes in the strategic firepower of business advice delivered by highly experienced in-house lawyers. Helen’s focus is to seamlessly connect Juno lawyers into organisations and improve the strategy, design and performance of in-house legal functions. Helen was previously with In-house Lawyers Association of New Zealand, New Zealand Oil & Gas, Vector, Natural Gas Corporation, Novartis UK, Nestle UK, Electricity Corporation of New Zealand. Helen is the Co-Chair, In-house Counsel Worldwide establishment body, Past President – in-house Lawyers Association of New Zealand, Former Chair - Island Bay School Board and Volunteer Counsellor – Youthline New Zealand
Bianca Miller, Senior Counsel, Shift Advisory Limited
Bianca has 20 years experience in the legal profession. She commenced her legal career in private practice before moving in-house. She spent over 10 years at Telecom/Spark in the in-house legal team primary supporting the retail arms of the business before moving into a strategic commercial role within company. Following that Bianca moved to SHIFT and worked with a government owned infrastructure company for a few years. Bianca loves working with high performing teams on challenging and complex work, and learning about different industries along the way. Bianca thrives in an environment where she can apply her legal skills across a business, and work closely with the team. Bianca is passionate about the value in-house lawyers can bring to organisations beyond their traditional functional roles. Bianca currently works for SHIFT and is on a long-term secondment to NX2 Northern Express Group as their sole in-house legal counsel. NX2 is responsible for financing, designing, building, maintaining and operating the new Puhoi to Warkworth motorway for 25 years.
