Henry McClintock, Partner – Audit & Assurance and Head of Not-For-Profit, BDO New Zealand
Originally from the UK, Henry studied law before training and working as a Chartered Accountant in London and then moved to Wellington. He now has over 18 years of experience in auditing and assurance services. Henry works mainly in the small and medium enterprise market, across a wide range of industries to provide sound technical and business advice. He is a Public Benefit Entity specialist and is the Head of Not for Profit services at BDO in New Zealand. He works with a large number of National Charity and National Association clients. He has spoken at a number of conference on fraud and risk management in the Not for Profit sector and delivers audit training on behalf of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
Susan Barker, Director, Sue Barker Charities Law
Sue Barker is the director of Sue Barker Charities Law, a boutique law firm specialising in charities law and public tax law. Sue is a director of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, and a member of the Core Reference Group for the review of the Charities Act 2005. Sue is also a co-author of the text, The Law and Practice of Charities in New Zealand (LexisNexis, 2013), and a contributor to Regulating Charities: the Inside Story (Routledge, 2017) and Corporate Governance - A Practical Handbook (2ed) (Wolters Kluwer, 2016). In 2019, Sue was awarded the New Zealand Law Foundation International Research Fellowship Te Karahipi Rangahau ā Taiao, New Zealand’s premier legal research award, to undertake research into the question “what does a world-leading framework of charity law look like”?
Nick Bland, Senior Associate, Simpson Grierson
Nick is a senior associate in the tax group. He advises on all aspects of New Zealand's domestic and international tax law, including corporate and personal income tax and withholding taxes, double taxation conventions, GST (New Zealand's value-added tax), and customs duties and tariffs. In addition, Nick is an expert in relation to charities and not-for-profit organisations. He provides extensive advice to such organisations, and to corporates and other clients involved with them, in relation to both tax and general matters. He regularly deals with the Charities Commission and Inland Revenue on such matters.
Phillippa Wilkie, Special Counsel, Chapman Tripp
Phillippa is a Special Counsel with Chapman Tripp. She advises on all aspects of trust law and operation and has extensive experience acting for individuals and families in establishing and adapting trust structures, for trustees, and for counterparties dealing with trustees. She advises individuals on ‘best fit’ solutions for asset protection structures and implementation, on contentious family settlements involving trusts and beneficiaries, succession plans for individuals and their families, and on relationship property protection. She also leads the For Purpose practice at Chapman Tripp, advising charities, community trusts, non-profits and social enterprise.
Sandy Thompson, Director & CEO, LEAD Centre for Not For Profit Governance & Leadership
Prior to becoming part of LEAD, Sandy was one of the team delivering the Unitec Graduate Diploma in Not for Profit Management, a role she took on after her 10 years as the founding leader of the National Association for OSCAR. Sandy’s experience as a leader in the not for profit sector and her experience facilitating and mentoring other leaders, has led to a specialisation portfolio of values based management and leadership mentoring and training, organisation development based on strengths based approaches including appreciative inquiry, and the training of community facilitators and trainers. Sandy works with boards and leaders from a wide range of organisations, both large and small, including those from the social services, faith-based, environment, arts, and migrant sectors. Sandy is also co-chair of the Trust Board of Hui E! – New Zealand’s national organisation promoting, strengthening and connecting the Community Sector.
