Laura Valiant, Head of Risk, Compliance & Conduct for Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking at Westpac New Zealand Limited
Laura has significant experience in the banking & financial services and corporate sectors gained in London and New Zealand. After working for DLA Piper and New York firm Kaye Scholer LLP, Laura built her extensive in-house career at a number of the world's largest banks and corporates including ABN AMRO, Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays Bank and GE Capital, where she specialised in a variety of areas including corporate lending; treasury funding, equities trading; commodities futures; institutional and corporate transaction banking; asset lending and leasing; floorplan finance; import finance; and general corporate and commercial advice. More recently Laura held the Deputy General Counsel position at GE Capital and later GE Money (acquired by Latitude) and is currently General Counsel, Company Secretary and Head of Risk and Compliance at ASX listed FlexiGroup.
Fran Burley, Senior Associate, Bell Gully
Fran acts on a variety of financing transactions, with a focus on acquisition and leveraged financing, debt restructuring, refinancing and general corporate financing. She provides regulatory advice with a specific focus on consumer credit law. She acts for a number of leading financial institutions such as ANZ, BNZ and ASB as well as corporate and private equity clients. Her recent work includes advising on the 2degrees Mobile syndicated senior financing and advising Element Financial Corporation on its global acquisition of General Electric Capital Corporation's fleet leasing business in New Zealand. Fran began working at Bell Gully in 2007 before moving to London in 2010 to work for the banking and finance team at Allen & Overy. During that time she was seconded to the leverage finance team at HSBC Bank. Fran returned to Bell Gully in 2013.
Richard Massey, Senior Associate, Bell Gully
Richard is a Senior Associate in Bell Gully’s litigation team. He specialises in consumer law and has acted for a range of clients on issues under the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act and the Fair Trading Act. Richard frequently advises on credit matters, including responsible lending, disclosure and credit fees, as well as broader consumer issues including unfair contract terms and online contracts. Before joining Bell Gully, Richard worked at Slaughter and May in London, where he acted on a range of complex contractual disputes and regulatory investigations.
Katie Carson, Consultant, DLA Piper
Katie handles a broad range of banking and finance requirements for domestic and international banks, VC and PE funds, FinTechs, corporate borrowers and trustees. Her complex transactional experience covers institutional and acquisition finance, structured arrangements (including securitisation programmes), debt capital markets, trade finance (including receivables financing) and debt restructuring. Katie is also involved in product development projects and financial services regulatory issues for clients that include both disruptors and long-established businesses. She has a particular interest in global FinTech innovation. Her specialist regulatory experience covers consumer finance laws, the regulations governing payments systems, anti-money laundering legislation, and open banking/data regulation. Katie and her team are well-respected across the market and offer technical excellence combined with a responsive and practical approach to dealing with difficult or strategic issues.
Kate Lane, Partner – Banking and Finance, MinterEllisonRuddWatts
Kate is a very experienced banking and finance lawyer with specialist legal knowledge advising financiers, borrowers and other market participants across a broad range of areas, from institutional finance to consumer finance. She has a particular speciality in advising financial institutions on compliance and risk issues and processes with a deep understanding of New Zealand’s banking legislation and regulatory framework. Kate is recognised in all key international directories as a leader in her field.
