Dr Tim Channon
Tim is a special counsel at Barry.Nilsson. with over 30 years’ experience specialising in litigating numerous insurance and general commercial disputes, including property damage and product liability, indemnity and recovery matters, arson and fraud. Tim has advised insurers on claims relating to cheque fraud and mortgage insurance across the entire sector from the construction, manufacturing and mining industries to the small business sector and householders. He has drafted household, motor vehicle, medical indemnity and lenders mortgage insurance policies for several insurers and acted in many complex commercial disputes, such as contractual, building and trade practices disputes.
Adam Abboud
Adam is a Special Counsel in the firm's Insurance team. Adam began his legal career at a community legal centre, before spending the last 12 years working in various aspects of insurance law. At McInnes Wilson Lawyers since 2017, Adam has specialised in general insurance (including indemnity / policy coverage advice), motor accidents (personal injury CTP and property damage recovery / defended), public liability and dust disease matters. Adam previously spent four and a half years representing plaintiffs in personal injury, before moving to work with defendants. As a result, he has a unique insight into how both sides approach matters, enabling him to provide clients with efficient and cost-effective advice to help them through litigation. Adam was a Law Society Student Mentor in 2018, and has been on the Law Society Injury Compensation Committee since 2019.
Joshua Beran
Prior to commencing at the bar Joshua worked for over 10 years conducting both Plaintiff and Defendant litigation, in and for large national and boutique law firms in all areas of insurance law. Since coming to the bar Joshua has broadened his practice to include Criminal and Commercial litigation but still specialises in insurance and personal injury Litigation, again for Plaintiffs and Defendants. Joshua regularly appears in the Personal Injury Commission and has a keen interest in the developing Federal Diversity Jurisdiction that has been created by the Personal Injury Commission Act.
Dr Richard Sekel
Dr Richard Sekel is an occupational medical practitioner. He was on the NSW WorkCover Committee of the 1998 WIM Workers Compensation Act. He is a Fellow and Chair of the Education Committee of Australian Medicolegal College. He is an ABIME Certified Independent Medical Examiner, a Fellow of International Academy of Independent Medical Examiners, has a Diploma in Occupational Health, is on the Training Faculty of the American Board of Independent Medical Examiners, and is on the Editorial Board of International Disability Journal. He is a peer reviewer of American Medical Association Publishing (Publishers of the AMA Impairment Guides). He is a NSW SIRA Authorised Health Practitioner.
Amanda Bond
Amanda Bond is a partner of Gillis Delaney Lawyers who specialises in insurance claims. Amanda is an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law and has over 20 years of experience in acting for government entities, insurers, self-insurers and corporations. In the last four years Amanda has been recognised by the Doyles Guide as a leading liability lawyer, pre-eminent and leading worker’s compensation lawyer and recommended lawyer in CTP demonstrating her breadth of experience.
Ian Jones
Ian Jones specialises in major loss motor vehicle insurance claims for licensed insurers in NSW and interstate. He advises on all aspects of motor vehicle disputes, including major/catastrophic injury, indemnity disputes, fraud and actions against third parties, including recovery actions between insurers. Ian engages with insureds to foster stronger relationships with his clients and has built strong rapport with claimant lawyers in the CTP sphere. Ian initially studied law with the Legal Practitioners Admission Board and then completed a Master of Laws at the University of Technology Sydney. He is a member of the Law Society Injury Compensation Committee and has also been appointed to the Personal Injury Commission’s Rules Committee. Ian is a sports fanatic, a keen golfer and skier, he also enjoys running and pilates. When he's not engaged in sporting activities, his time is occupied with family, particularly his three boys.
David Miller
David Miller is a partner in both the insurance and the corporate teams at Colin Biggers & Paisley. Widely experienced in asbestos-related matters, David is a regular speaker in Australia and overseas on indemnity and claims management issues. David is also experienced in corporate governance and risk management (including regulator actions involving the ACCC and various WorkCover authorities), Australian Consumer Law issues and commercial disputes. Recently David acted for various parties called to give evidence before the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption in Operation Credo and Operation Spicer. He continues to provide advice to clients in ICAC related matters. In the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 editions of Best Lawyers in Australia, David was listed as a leading insurance lawyer. He was also listed as a leading product liability lawyer in the 2017 edition. David was admitted to practice in NSW and Federal courts in 2000. He sits on the Professional Conduct Committee and the Ethics Committee of the Law Society of NSW. David is also a member of the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Sydney-based Centre for Digestive Diseases.
Karen Stott
Karen Stott has been a full-time mediator and facilitator since 2016, with over 20 years of litigation experience acting for plaintiffs and defendants. Karen’s mediations practice covers a range of matters including abuse law, medical negligence, motor accidents, worker injury, occupier liability, professional negligence, commercial matters, building & construction, insolvency, and the like. Mediation of abuse claims has included multiple jurisdictions and institutions / respondents, nearing 200 matters to date. Karen has been a Court-appointed mediator to the ACT Magistrates Court since 2017 and was appointed as a sessional mediator to the NSW Personal Injury Commission in 2022. She has been named by ‘Doyle’s List’ as a Leading Mediator NSW each year since 2018.
Elaine Cheung
Elaine is a special counsel in the financial services and fintech team in Piper Alderman’s Sydney office. She has extensive experience advising and acting for banking and financial services clients in a variety of areas. Her practice includes acting for and advising clients in relation to regulatory compliance and consumer credit issues, the regulation of financial products and services and financial services reform, privacy and data breaches, product design and distribution, applications for Australian Credit Licences and Australian Financial Services Licences, reviewing trust deeds and preparation of loan and mortgage documentation in relation to loans to self-managed super funds, real property financing transactions, mortgage enforcement proceedings in the Supreme Court of New South Wales, anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing issues and trade mark and business name issues. Elaine also acts for private clients in residential property transactions and estate planning and estate administration matters.
