Karen Gaston
Karen has experience conducting complex, lengthy litigation usually with the overlay of an emotional family dispute. In particular she has substantial experience running family provision applications, litigation about the validity of wills (sometimes called solemn form probate litigation), applications concerning the construction of wills, Beddoe applications, power of attorney disputes, and equity litigation involving unconscionable conduct and undue influence. Karen is a Queensland Law Society accredited specialist in succession law. Doyle’s Guide recognises Karen as “Preeminent” in the Wills and Estate Litigation Lawyers category in 2020 and 2021. Karen works as a team with a solicitor, to represent a client. She does not accept briefs directly from the general public. Karen can, however, provide a list of referrals to highly regarded solicitors who can assist members of the public directly.
Angela Cornford-Scott
Angela Cornford-Scott is the director of Cornford-Scott Lawyers Pty Ltd and an accredited specialist in succession law. She has worked in the area of succession law for over 20 years and has a particular interest in estate planning, trust matters and estate administration issues. Angela is the current Chair of the QLS Succession Law Committee. Angela is a member of STEP and a previous Chair of the Queensland Branch. She has lectured for QUT, the College of Law and is a regular presenter of seminars. She also co-authors the Lexis Nexis practical guidance publications in Succession law and Elder law for Queensland. Angela has been named in the Doyles Guide as a pre eminent lawyer in the areas of both Wills and Estates and Estate Litigation in Queensland for a number of years and was the only Queensland lawyer named as pre eminent in both categories in the Doyles Guide Australia. Angela was also named the Lawyer of the Year for 2020 in Succession Planning by her peers in the 12th edition of Best Lawyers.
Hayley Mitchell
Hayley Mitchell is a Wills and estates specialist lawyer in Brisbane. Hayley has dual accreditation in succession law (Queensland) and self managed superannuation funds (through the SMSF Association). Hayley can provide advice and assistance to clients in a range of matters including estate planning, Wills, enduring powers of attorney and superannuation binding death benefit nominations, advice to executors and beneficiaries of estates and SMSF disputes and superannuation death benefit disputes.
Wendy Miller
Wendy Miller has been an accredited specialist in family law since 2000. She has practised solely in family law since 1996. Wendy has had experience across the whole spectrum of family law but her main practice now is in financial matters. One of her goals is to develop a practice in family law that specializes in tax and estate and business succession planning issues. Specialties include: taxation issues arising in family law situations.
Gavin Handran KC
Gavin Handran is a King's Counsel and a member of the highly esteemed North Quarter Lane Chambers. He was one of Australia’s preeminent junior counsel before he took silk in 2020. Gavin is predominantly briefed in complex corporate and commercial cases, and is a very experienced trial and appellate counsel. Some of Gavin’s recent cases include acting for Springfield City Group in a significant claim against Pipe Networks (TPG), acting for unit owners in the former Hyatt Coolum Resort against Mr Clive Palmer and his corporate interests in a long-running and complex dispute, which included in one respect an application for special leave to appeal to the High Court, and appearing for the former CEO of Dreamworld at the inquest into the tragic deaths of four patrons on the Thunder River Rapids Ride in 2016. Gavin is a keen sportsperson, having represented Australia in volleyball. He now fuses his passion for law and sport in acting as the player advocate for the Brisbane Lions, AFL club. Gavin is a nationally accredited mediator and takes much delight from assisting parties to resolve their disputes in all areas of law, except family law.
Susan Moriarty
Susan Moriarty is a former Chief of Staff to the State Attorney-General. In 1999, she established her own law firm specializing in human rights and employment law and over the past 23 years developed an expertise in advising and representing public service professional managers and health practitioners in the areas of discrimination, dismissal and disciplinary proceedings. She is consistently named one of the 3 best employment lawyers in Brisbane as well as one of the 7 best Unfair Dismissal law firms. In 2014 and again in 2015 her firm won the International Business Magazine Award for Australian Discrimination Law Firm of the Year. For several years, including 2020, her Practice is one of only 9 law firms recommended by the Doyle’s Guide for Employee Lawyers in Queensland. In 2022, the firm again appeared in the Doyle’s Guide to Best Employee Lawyers.
Angela Rae
Angela Rae’s principal expertise is in commercial litigation and estate matters. In particular, she practices in: company law disputes, including regulatory matters; professional liability of directors and officers, particularly in financial advice; insolvency; disputes involving partnerships and incorporated associations; equity and trusts; and contract and real property disputes. Recent matters include acting for the special purpose liquidators of Queensland Nickel Pty Ltd; acting for the majority shareholder in a $6M oppression action; and acting for the Commonwealth in relation to the insolvency consequences of a terminated statutory scheme. She also regularly acts in trust and estate matters, currently including a $6M estate with assets in Australia and Europe. Angela has a professional interest in “plain language” drafting and is a member of Clarity International. She speaks internationally on topics such as drafting by committee and challenges with self-represented litigants. Additionally, Angela speaks Japanese fluently, completing part of her law studies at Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo and postgraduate research at the Australian National University.
Giles Watson
Giles Watson helps law practices realise their potential through coaching consultancy and tailored professional development. He specialises in client-facing challenges such as positioning and strategy, pricing, marketing & business development, customer experience and client service. prior to setting up his own consultancy, he managed the practice management course at Queensland Law Society and was a business development manager for three London law firms.
Michael Amerena
Michael Amerena was called to the Bar in 1980. In the decade to 1990, he practised criminal law, including appearing at commissions of inquiry, such as the Fitzgerald Inquiry. In the decade to 2000, Michael commenced a busy general civil practice. From 2000 Michael has, by choice, practised mainly in commercial, equity and property litigation in the District, Supreme and Federal Courts, including at appellate level. Michael has been elected on nine occasions to the Council of the Bar Association of Queensland.
Leone Costigan
Leone Costigan is an Executive Counsel in the Herbert Smith Freehills Finance, Real Estate and Property team specialising in real estate transactions. Leone works with major property development companies and property trusts in Australia advising on the acquisition, disposal, development, leasing and ongoing management of real property assets. Leone is also an alumni of HSF's digital law group which is a team of specialist lawyers that work with the firm's multi-disciplinary teams to provide advice to clients to assist with digital transformation and the creation, promotion and commercialisation of smart legal contracts. As part of the HSF's pro-bono legal programme, she enjoys providing legal advice to pro-bono clients including SVDP, Ronald McDonald House and Youngcare. Leone is an accredited specialist in property law, and Tax Institute member. She is also a member of the board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities SEQ.
Dale Cliff
Dale Cliff has practiced almost exclusively in the area of commercial litigation for in excess of 20 years. In August 2010 he was named in the top 100 Lawyers in Australia as recorded in the Monash University Survey of Corporate In house Counsel. He has conducted over 100 trials in the Supreme and Federal Courts of Australia. Dale has particular expertise in insolvency and tax litigation, having acted in some of Australia's largest corporate collapses and bankruptcies. , Dale is well known for his commercial approach to the law using his skill set to achieve a result for his client with or without recourse to the courts. He provides a unique commitment to clients' problems using a range of tactics and strategy to achieve the desired outcome. He is a problem solver with the skill and experience to bring a new perspective to any problem.
Lachlan Tassell
Lachlan has a broad commercial practice with a focus on construction and infrastructure, energy and resources, contract, corporations and professional negligence. Prior to coming to the Bar, Lachlan worked in the construction and arbitration teams at Corrs Chambers Westgarth (senior associate from 2020). Lachlan graduated with a Bachler of Laws and Bachelor of Business (Finance) in 2013 and was admitted as a lawyer in 2014. He is currently completing his Master of Laws at the University of Melbourne.
Mark Healy
Mark Healy, Barrister, Level 19 Inns of Court, Before being called to the bar in 2004, Mark was a solicitor for 13 years., Having worked many cases over the years his areas of practice are substantial. Mark is a highly regarded lawyer and has represented clients in many aspects of law, namely within the employment sector. In addition, he has been listed as a leading Queensland Employment & WHS Barrister in Doyle's Guide in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020, before taking some long leave in 2021 after thirty years as a practitioner.
Guy Waterman
