Gail Owen OAM, Partner, HWL Ebsworth Lawyers Gail Owen, OAM FAICD, is a corporate lawyer at AEMO., She is also Chairman of the Victorian Fisheries Authority and a director of Australian Pork Limited and The Queen's Fund Limited. ,Before joining AEMO in late 2021, Gail was a partner with HWL Ebsworth Lawyers, and previous to that a partner at Gadens Lawyers and Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst). She has also worked as a legal adviser at CRA Limited and Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited. She was President of the Law Institute of Victoria in 1991 and is an honorary life member. Gail has been named in "Best Lawyers" in the practice areas Energy, Mining, Oil & Gas and Mergers & Acquisitions.
David Gilbertson KC
David Gilbertson practises in all areas of administrative, commercial, corporations, media and defamation law. He has an extensive practice in media and defamation law. As well as plaintiffs, David has acted for most of the large media outlets and several book publishers in Australia. Most recently, David appeared in the High Court in Google LLC v Defteros [2022] HCA 27 and the Victorian Court of Appeal in Gatto v Australian Broadcasting Corporation [2022] VSCA 66
Matt Ellis
Matt Ellis is an insurance lawyer based in Melbourne. Matt advises the insurance sector in both non-contentious and contentious matters, including in respect of corporate transactions, commercial contracting, distribution, regulation, reinsurance and disputes. He acts for local and London market insurers in professional indemnity, D&O, liability, and property disputes. He is also co-head of the cyber insurance practice. Matt advises insurers and intermediaries on conduct and prudential regulatory matters, distribution, disclosure obligations, policy and treaty wordings, financial services and regulatory enforcement. He has extensive knowledge of the sector across general, life and health insurance, and a deep understanding of all facets of the conduct of insurance business.
Paul Sokolowski
Paul Sokolowski is the national practice leader of Arnold Bloch Leibler’s taxation practice and a preeminent tax lawyer (Doyle’s Guide, 2022). Paul advises a range of clients, including (ultra) high net worth individuals, large private groups, public entities and not for profits, on Federal tax issues in reviews, audits and disputes, and in domestic and international transactions. With many years' experience in taxation law and administration, Paul has an enviable reputation for representing his clients with dedication, passion and understanding and providing technically astute, strategic, commercially sound and understandable taxation advice. Prior to joining Arnold Bloch Leibler, Paul held various positions with the ATO, the last of which was as a senior officer, in what is now the Public Groups and International division, of the Tax Office.
Michael Chin
Michael Chin is published, a regular presenter and chair at industry forums, widely travelled, multi-lingual and holds honours degrees in law and finance, a masters in finance with distinction and a diploma of management. He has clerked with the judges of the High Court of New Zealand and worked with leading law firms in Australia, New Zealandand the United Kingdom. In addition, he has worked and led teams while in-house at energy companies INPEX, Santos, AGL and Jemena. He is currently senior legal counsel of APA. This involves working with teams from India to Luxembourg to Brazil. Phoebe Roberts
Phoebe is a Senior Associate in MinterEllison's market leading Climate and Sustainability Risk Governance team. She is considered a leading expert on contractual climate risk exposures (and opportunities) and the implementation of decarbonisation strategies, particularly in the built environment. With a background in delivery of construction and infrastructure projects both in Australia and the UK, Phoebe brings a specialist understanding of the complex legal and commercial nature of procurement and supply chains to climate risk advisory. Phoebe is the Co-Lead of APAC and Director of Implementation at The Chancery Lane Project (TCLP), a global collaboration mobilising the legal profession to re wire contracts and laws to tackle climate change. Phoebe regularly convenes and delivers workshops across APAC, the UK and EU with lawyers and industry experts to address climate change related risks and embed climate solutions into commercial contracts. Phoebe leads TCLP’s Built Environment workstream.
Brendan Earle
Brendan solves problems and delivers outcomes. He is an experienced negotiator who simplifies complexity and leads multi-disciplinary teams to meet client objectives. He uses strong project management skills to deliver efficiency and meet timelines. His board and governance experience gives him a well-rounded perspective on challenging legal and commercial issues. Brendan has specialised in private M&A and negotiated transactions for more than 20 years. He has been personally involved in more than 50 significant transactions involving buying, selling or merging businesses valued at more than $8 billion. For several years he has appeared in peer reviewed directories for Corporate/Governance, Healthcare, and Mergers & Acquisitions. Brendan is a director of Scope (Aust) Limited, one of the largest disability services providers in Australia. He is Chair of the Risk & Audit Committee.
