Mark Cox
Mark (BA LLB Hons, University of Melbourne) leads the specialist employment law team at MDC Legal. He has over 20 years practice, mainly in industrial, workplace and employment law. He previously worked at a commercial litigation firm, then as a senior associate of a national firm, and as Principal Solicitor of the Employment Law Centre. Mark is a well-regarded practitioner in workplace relations law, named as a “leading lawyer” in Doyle’s Guide 2014, 2015, 2016, and “market leader” in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. In addition to providing strategic and front-end advice and implementing employment contracts, policies and procedures, Mark has conducted litigation and acted as counsel in several jurisdictions on “both sides of the fence” in a wide variety of matters, including injunctions and restraint of trade matters, protected industrial action, contractual claims, general protections, and unfair dismissal claims, and bullying and discrimination claims.
Robert French
Robert French is a dispute resolution lawyer with experience in Hong Kong, Victoria and Western Australia. His practice primarily comprises commercial, administrative and employment law. Robert joined the Bar in 2013 and has appeared in all courts since that time. He has appeared unled in appeals to the Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia and to the High Court (special leave only) in proceedings where he appeared on behalf of the Minister for Immigration & Border Protection. In the employment law context, he has appeared unled for employers and employees in Fair Work Australia, the Federal Court of Australia (including the Full Court of the Federal Court) and the Federal Magistrates Court in a range of employment related disputes. Prior to joining the Bar, Robert was a managing associate in the dispute resolution team at an international firm in Hong Kong. Here, he gained experience acting for and against regulators in large contentious regulatory matters – including acting for large financial institutions in matters involving the Securities & Futures Commission, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He also worked for two national firms in Victoria – in both Commercial Litigation and Employment Relations teams – acting for a company director in insider trading proceedings brought by ASIC and for the Australian Building & Construction Commission and the Fair Work Ombudsman in industrial relations disputes.
Samantha Maddern
Samantha has worked across a variety of roles in human resources, employee relations and employment law, including secondments at INPEX Australia and AMMA (WA), as an in-house lawyer for a mining company, and as an employee relations consultant for WA’s leading employer organisation. This diverse experience means her advice is practical and solutions-focussed as she helps her clients (large or small) successfully navigate the complexities and challenges that frequently arise in the modern Australian workplace and to effectively manage workplace risk – both the expected and the unexpected. Sam’s clients come from a broad range of sectors but, in particular, the mining, oil & gas, tertiary education, and not-for-profits sectors. Sam is an avid North Melbourne supporter and hoping for a MUCH brighter future now that Clarko has arrived.
