Gavin Handran
Gavin Handran is a King’s Counsel and a member of the highly esteemed North Quarter Lane Chambers. He was one of Australia’s preeminent junior counsel before he took silk in 2020. Gavin is predominantly briefed in complex corporate and commercial cases, and is a very experienced trial and appellate counsel. Some of Gavin’s recent cases include acting for Springfield City Group in a significant claim against Pipe Networks (TPG), acting for unit owners in the former Hyatt Coolum Resort against Mr Clive Palmer and his corporate interests in a long-running and complex dispute, which included in one respect an application for special leave to appeal to the High Court, and appearing for the former CEO of Dreamworld at the inquest into the tragic deaths of four patrons on the Thunder River Rapids Ride in 2016.
Jake McKinnon
Jake McKinnon is a Research manager at Cushman & Wakefield, a global commercial real estate firm. After obtaining his degree in Urban and Environmental Planning, he worked in property consulting industry with a focus on property research, spatial analysis, demographics and planning. Jake then moved into commercial real estate research and advisory where he currently leads Queensland research for Cushman and Wakefield.
Sarah Merrett
Sarah Merrett is a special counsel in Baker McKenzie's Real Estate Practice Group in Brisbane. She has more than 13 years' experience advising on real estate transactions, property developments, infrastructure projects and tenure issues. Sarah's experience has been gained from advising clients in both government and private sectors. Sarah advises on various property and related matters, drawing from her keen interest in the area of property law to align with her clients' commercial drivers where possible. She provides property advice in respect of large projects, and has brought to settlement both acquisitions and disposals of assets. Sarah also has extensive experience in leasing and licensing transactions, in relation to commercial, retail and industrial assets. Her current practice focuses primarily on the renewables and hotel sectors, commercial leasing and capital transactions.
Leanne O’Neill
As a partner in Cooper Grace Ward’s property, planning and environment team, Leanne advises on all aspects of land access, management and use for developers, resources companies, government and agribusinesses. Leanne brings 15 years’ experience, including nine years as a solicitor representing the State of Queensland in negotiations and litigation. Leanne advises developers on planning and development approvals and appeals under the Planning Act 2016, and compulsory acquisition and valuation law. She provides strategic advice and legal support to petroleum and resources companies on environmental, water, vegetation and biosecurity compliance, as well as native title and cultural heritage, and landholder access and compensation agreements. Leanne also advises agribusinesses and other major landholders on the diversification of land use and income streams.
David Hughes
David is an Accredited Tax Law Specialist – one of only five in QLD, and a Chartered Tax Adviser. He has over 20 years’ experience acting for taxpayers of all types including individuals, SMEs, and listed and unlisted public companies across all aspects of tax law. David’s direct intervention with the Australian Tax Office has often resulted in a quick and inexpensive resolution of what could otherwise be a lengthy and expensive court case. He is a robust litigator as demonstrated by many successful outcomes won both in the AAT and courts. His philosophy is that litigation should be the last not the first resort. He has been named in Best Lawyers Australia for Tax Law and recognised by Doyle’s Guide since 2015 as a Leading Tax Lawyer. David is the Queensland Law Society’s Representative to the ATO Legal Practitioners Round Table Forum.
Bronwyn Clarkson
Bronwyn Clarkson is a Partner in the Commercial Property and Energy & Resources teams. Her work in the resources area has included advising on joint ventures, farm-in agreements, corporate restructuring, tenement acquisitions, due diligence investigations, gas sales and transportation agreements, pipeline land access work and landholder compensation. Bronwyn also regularly advises clients on a range of property transactions, including property joint ventures, commercial and residential developments, commercial and rental leases and pastoral and crown leases, as well as town planning and environmental matters. Bronwyn is the 2019 past-President of the Queensland Petroleum & Exploration Association (QUPEX), and is a member of the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association (AMPLA), the Australian Pipeline and Gas Association (APGA) and the Queensland Environmental Law Association (QELA).
