Hazel Brewer
Hazel Brewer is a partner in Squire Patton Boggs’ Perth office. Hazel handles shipping, international trade, offshore energy and marine insurance matters for a wide variety of clients across the energy and resources, commodities and maritime sectors. Hazel’s practice covers both contract advisory and disputes work (domestic and international arbitration and court litigation). She handles a broad range of issues, including under charter parties, contracts of affreightment, transhipment contracts, offshore services contracts, bills of lading and letters of credit. She has been recognized by the major legal directories over many years for her work in these sectors.
Gregory Nell SC
Gregory Nell SC has been practising at the New South Wales Bar since 1991, predominantly in the area of Admiralty and Maritime Law. He has been described as “a giant of the Maritime Bar” (Chambers and Partners, Asia-Pacific, Shipping: The Bar – Australia (2020)), and has been recognised as “one of the most prominent shipping practitioners in the region” (Who’s Who Legal Shipping (2020)), the “pre-eminent shipping barrister in Australia” (Who’s Who Legal : Shipping (2018)) and “Market Leader” (Doyles Guide to the Australian Legal Profession (2017-20)). Gregory is the former Chairman of the NSW Bar Association’s “Transportation, Maritime and Air Law Committee” (2012-14) and past member of one of the NSW Bar Association’s Professional Conduct Committees. Gregory is currently president of the Anglo Australasian Lawyers Society (Australian Chapter) (AALS) and the Chair of the Australian Maritime and Transportation Arbitration Commission (AMTAC), positions that he has held since 2015 and 2017 respectively.
Jesper Martens
Jesper advises the world’s leading shipowners, tug owners and operators, charterers, P&I Clubs, commodity trading companies, chartering and sale & purchase brokers, ship managers, freight forwarders and shipping agents. Jesper specialises in advising clients on the resolution of all types of shipping matters, both in court / arbitration and on the drafting of contracts. Jesper was recognised as Lawyer of the Year in Sydney by Best Lawyers Australia 2021 for his work in Shipping & Maritime Law. He is listed as one of the firm’s notable practitioners in Band 1 for Shipping in Chambers Asia-Pacific 2021. Doyle’s Guide 2021 also named Jesper as a Leading lawyer for Shipping & Maritime Law in Australia. Jesper has also been named in Who’s Who Legal — Australia for Shipping 2021, and is recognised for ‘his excellent work in maritime law as well as related insurance and reinsurance matters’. Dr Pat Saraceni
Pat is a member of Clifford Chance's global litigation and dispute resolution team, and heads the Maritime team in Australia. She specialises in complex dispute resolution, acting for multinational and local companies in sectors including energy and resources (oil, gas and power), mining, logistics and shipping. She is a Past President of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ) and chairs it's Western Australian branch. She has a Doctorate of Juridical Science in Shipping Law from the University of Western Australia. Pat has lectured at the University of Notre Dame including in shipping law and has tutored at the University of Western Australia. She also sits on a number of professional committees.
Toby Stephens
Toby is a member of HFW's Global Crisis Management team and specialises in risk and crisis management/emergency response in the marine and energy sectors. Toby's work involves managing major marine and energy disasters including undertaking the initial response, managing his clients' exposure to civil and criminal liabilities and resolving the subsequent disputes. Toby is also recognised for insurance coverage and other marine and energy related commercial and contractual disputes. Toby advises organisations on their risk management, including contractual and regulatory liabilities, crisis management systems, organisational resilience and crisis preparedness. Toby lectures regularly on the subject, both in the UK and internationally and he has been admitted as a Technical Specialist of the Institute of Risk Management (SIRM). Toby is recommended by Legal 500 UK 2012 for shipping.
