Presenters
Ian Lloyd
Ian Lloyd QC was called to the NSW Bar in 1977. He took silk in 1989. He is also a member of the bar in Hong Kong, New York and England & Wales. Mr Lloyd is one of Australia's leading silks practising in crime. He specialises in fraud, corruption and environmental crime cases. Mr Lloyd was during the 1980s a Senior Crown Counsel with the Hong Government and in the early 1990s the Senior Crown Prosecutor for NSW. Mr Lloyd is also a former Justice of the Court of Appeal of the Fiji Islands and Conjoint Associate Professor with the University of Newcastle Law School.
Her Honour Penelope Wass
Judge Wass SC has almost 30 years’ experience in law and advocacy, including 9 years as a Commonwealth prosecutor, 16 years as a barrister at the NSW Bar, and 4 years as a Judge. She was appointed as a Senior Counsel in 2013 and appointed to the District Court in 2016.
In practice, Judge Wass SC maintained a diverse civil and criminal practice in all jurisdictions in NSW, and also in the Federal Court and the High Court of Australia. She sits in both the civil and criminal jurisdictions of the Court.
Sian McGee
Sian McGee is a barrister at Maurice Byers Chambers. She practices in criminal and administrative law. In 2016-2017 she was junior counsel assisting the Royal Commission into the detention and protection of children in the Northern Territory. As a solicitor she worked for the Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT and a private criminal defence firm.
Cara Feiner
Cara was admitted as a solicitor in 2006 and was called to the bar in 2011.
Prior to commencing work as a solicitor she was the Associate to His Honour Judge Zahra SC in the District Court of New South Wales. She has worked as both a solicitor and Crown Prosecutor with the New South Wales Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
For the last 9 years Cara has practiced primarily as a criminal defence barrister, appearing in a wide range of matters. She appears in the Local Court, Children’s Court, District Court and Supreme Court.
Jane Paingakulam
Jane Paingakulam was called to the Bar in October 2009. Since then she has practised predominantly in Criminal Law, including, since 2014, Work Health and Safety related prosecutions. Jane appears for both for the Crown/prosecution and the defence. Since 2015, Jane’s practice has been substantially comprised of criminal appellate work, appearing for both the offender and the Crown. In addition to appearing regularly in the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeal, Jane has appeared in appellate courts in South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory.
Dr Leon Turnbull
Dr Leon Turnbull is an Occupational and Forensic Psychiatrist who works in both civil and criminal forensic psychiatry.He holds Masters Degrees in Psychiatry and Health and Medical Law from Melbourne University, and is an Honorary Lecturer in Forensic Psychiatry at Melbourne University.
He principally works in private medico-legal practice, and has appointments with the Serious Offender Management Branch and the Forensic Leave Panel in Victoria. He is on the medical panels.He provides support to Victoria Police, the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, and the Returned Service League, among others.
Sam Macedone
Sam Macedone is the Senior Partner of Macedone Legal and an Accredited Specialist in Criminal Law. With 50 years experience across all aspects of law, he has established a reputation as a legal expert. Sam appears frequently as a legal commentator on TV and radio stations. Sam’s main professional focus is criminal advocacy work. During an extensive career, he has been involved in a number of high profile cases, more recently, the case of Curtis Scott, NSW NRL player, who was unlawfully detained by NSW Police. Sam has had the conduct of matters in the Local Court, District Court, Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeal and the High Court of Australia.
Andrew Boe
Andrew Boe is a barrister. He has appeared in trial courts in most states and territories; and at applications and appeals in appeal courts in NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory and in the High Court. Prior to coming to the Bar in 2009, Andrew operated law practices in Brisbane, since his admission in 1989
Karen Espiner
Much of Karen’s practice is devoted to representing clients in the District and Supreme Courts who have been charged with very serious criminal law matters including murder, sexual offences, drug offences, serious assaults and corporate offences. She also has a significant appellate practice, providing advice and representation to clients seeking to appeal their conviction and/or sentence from the District Court to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal.
In addition to appearing in court, an important part of Karen’s practice involves providing her clients with advice before criminal proceedings. She also has experience in quasi-criminal matters including disciplinary proceedings, coronial inquests and inquiries.
Maria Walz
Maria Walz is a passionate criminal lawyer. She cares about the law, and about ensuring that each of her clients receives the very best representation. Maria has more than ten years' experience in criminal law. Her skills have been recognised by the Law Society of New South Wales through her accreditation as a specialist in criminal law, and by her appointment to the Legal Aid NSW Serious Crime Panel. Using her careful attention to detail, Maria meticulously prepares every matter. She ensures that her clients understand the process they are involved in and are kept informed each step of the way.
