Session 1 covers pre-trial preparation including, enforcing disclosure at common law and statute, consideration of the indictment and particulars, consideration of character & reliability issues, consideration of admissibility of prosecution evidence, consideration of what to challenge and what to agree.
2.45pm to 3.30pm: Session 2: Case Concept and Opening Address
In Session 2 you will explore the case concept and opening address in detail.
3.30pm to 3.45pm Afternoon Tea
3.45pm to 4.30pm: Session 3: Cross-examination
Reflect on the purposes of cross-examination, consider how to determine the areas for cross-examination and review techniques.
4.30pm to 5.15pm: Session 4: Closing Address
Explore how to best identify the issues for a closing address.

Your Criminal Trial Preparation Guides:
Andrew Williams is a respected Adelaide lawyer and senior founding partner at Williams Barristers and Solicitors where he brings a wealth of criminal defence experience. A Prosecutor with DPP (State) from 2000 to 2006, he appeared as counsel and has significant trial experience in the Supreme, District and Magistrate’s Courts. Between 2006 and 2012 as an International legal adviser to the Solomon Islands Government, he provided legal advice and training to Police Prosecution, and appeared as a specialist criminal advocate. He has specialised in criminal defence work since his return to Adelaide. Andrew is recognised in the 2019, 2017 and 2016 Doyle’s Guide as one of Adelaide’s leading criminal lawyers. With over two decades experience as a police officer before qualifying as a lawyer, he knows the ins and outs of police investigation, methods and procedures. Having appeared as counsel for both prosecution and defence, he has excellent legal knowledge and understanding.
Gilbert Aitken is a highly respected Barrister who is currently engaged as lead Counsel in Queen v Perre. He had 13 years of experience as a solicitor and 13 years at the Bar, practising exclusively in criminal and human rights law. He has extensive experience in trials, criminal appeals and coronial inquests in South Australia and other jurisdictions. He has appeared in a wide range of cases, from murder to white collar crime. He has been lead counsel in a number of high-profile murder cases. He has a particular interest in international law and international criminal law and holds an LLM.
